A message from the new Convener and Vice-Convener of the General Council Business Committee

We welcome Mr Gordon Cairns (Convener) and Dr Bruce Nelson (Vice-Convener) as they address the Council's membership at the start of a new academic year.

As newly elected Convener of the Business Committee can I firstly express my sincere thanks and gratitude on behalf of us all to my predecessor, Sir Philip Mawer for his most valuable contribution both personal and professional to the work of the committee. I wish both he and his wife, Anne, a long happy and healthy retirement.

Our condolences to the family of the late John Clifford have already been sent but the fitting funeral and remembrance service in his name will live on in our memories.

To recently retired members of the Business Committee, our heartfelt thanks.   “Haste ye back” and keep in touch.

My thanks in anticipation of his invaluable support to the Vice Convener, Bruce Nelson, well known to the workings of the University and highly regarded by colleagues past and present.

I look forward to meeting up with our newly elected, and co-opted, members later in September for an induction session outlining the “modus operandi” of the Business Committee and its constituent standing committees and to the first Business Committee meeting of the year next month to discuss the many ongoing issues and challenges which our beloved University faces and to the help and support in any way we can.

With the essential support of our Secretary, William Duncan and Alison, the Business Committee will strive to continue the important work over many years in fostering the excellent links we enjoy with the University and being a critical friend as and when required.

Mr Gordon Cairns

Convener of the General Council Business Committee

As new Vice-Convener I should also like to add my thanks to Sir Philip for his tireless work supporting the Business Committee and the University, and wish him and Anne a long and happy retirement. I hope we will see them at General Council events from time to time. I should also like to thank Gordon for his work as Vice-Convener. I'm sure he'll be a worthy successor to Philip.I'm grateful to my colleagues for electing me as Vice-Convener and giving me the opportunity to increase my involvement in the work of the Committee and to continue my support for the University. And I look forward to meeting members at our General Council events.

Dr Bruce Nelson
