General Council half-yearly meetings and events Since 1858 the General Council has been required by statute to meet twice a year. Contemporary procedures for meetings of the General Council were approved by the General Council in 2000 with the timing of those meetings being revised in 2020: see section 3.3, page 8 of the Constitutional Arrangements. Document Constitutional Arrangements (1.36 MB / PDF) The Council meets on Saturdays. Meetings are open to all General Council members. At each meeting the Convener of the Business Committee reports on the work undertaken by the Business Committee to oversee the University's activities on the Council's behalf. In February the Principal gives his annual report. Traditionally this meeting has been followed by a reception and lunch for General Council membes and their guests. in June the formal Half-Yearly Meeting has typically been followed by an event to showcase some aspect of the University's work. In recent years, the February Half-Yearly Meeting has been livestreamed to allow those who cannot attend in person to engage live with the Principal's annual report. A recording is available to view thereafter on the General Council website. During the coronavirus pandemic, social distancing restrictions required the whole event to move online.
