Standing Committees

Standing Committees

The arrangements for the creation of Standing Committees are laid out in Part VI, page 16 of the Constitutional Arrangements.  A Convener is appointed from within the Business Committee for each Standing Committee.

While committees benefit from the cumulative experience of members over their term of service, there are opportunities each year for members to transfer to another standing committee.  New members are allocated to vacancies in standing committees with due regard to their experience and preference.

Each year, each standing committee presents its workplan for the year ahead to the Business Committee for approval.  The workplan will include matters remitted to it by the Business Committee and those initiated by the standing committee itself.

At a typical meeting, a standing committee will receive presentations from members of the University community - staff or students - and members will have the opportunity to ask detailed questions.  These privileged communications may contain confidential or sensitive material and this will be reflected in the extent of the public record.

The business of standing committees is formally minuted and reported to the Business Committee.
