Dr William Duncan has been appointed to succeed Professor Ann Smyth as Secretary of the General Council. Image Dr William Duncan, BSc, PhD, CIPD, was Chief Executive of the The Royal Society of Edinburgh - Scotland's national academy of science and letters - for over 30 years and believes this gives him considerable insight into the challenges and opportunities the HE sector faces from the introduction of the Teaching Excellence Framework, creation of UKRI and Brexit. He is currently the Convener of the Finance and Services Committee and has served on the Business Committee since 2018. His position as Secretary of the General Council will begin on 1 August 2022 for a period of four years in the first instance.
